Zurich to Berne. SBB : The national system.

Berne to Interlaken Ost. BLS (Bern Lotschberg Simplon).

Sometimes you have to change trains at Spiez.

These are both main line railways. At Interlaken you change to narrow-gauge railways. Stay on the BLS train to the end of the line, the transfer station at Interlaken Ost. Not unknown for arriving visitors to accidentally get out at the previous station, Interlaken West, and then have a long walk through the town.

Interlaken to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. BOB (Bernese Oberland Bahn).

Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg. WAB (Wengern Alp Bahn).

Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch. JB (Jungfrau Bahn).

The last three are separate mainly because they have different technical features. Behind the scenes the ownership is common, by the local Canton. The BOB is narrow gauge along the valley. The WAB is a "rack" railway that climbs steep hills using cogwheels on special rails between the tracks. The JB has a different electrical system and uses a technically different rack system. The trains stop next to each other at the transfer stations
